Ons bereikte het schokkende nieuws dat Janos Urai bij een bergbeklimming is omgekomen. Zie het volgende bericht dat ons via Christel bereikte:

The team at Utrecht University received the shocking news, this morning, that our colleague and friend, Prof. Janos Urai, lost his life last Sunday (28th of May) in a rock climbing accident in Belgium.

Janos was a master of salt mechanics and microstructure, the like of which we may never see again. He transformed studies of microstructure and deformation mechanisms in rocksalt, bischofite and carnallite through his renowned “see-through” deformation experiments and optical/SEM studies.  He was an astonishingly creative and productive scientist with uncanny insight into how deformation and recrystallization processes in salt and many other rock materials work, in particular the crucial role played by grain boundary fluids.  We have lost a lion in the field.  He was a friend to many of us,  and well known to almost all as one of the most colorful and conspicuous characters in the entire field.  He will be missed.
